October 2016 – Presidents Message

Arvind AkelaGreetings to all San Francisco Bay Section (SFBS) members of CWEA!

CWEA volunteers have been very busy organizing some amazing events to provide training events for its members in the past month.  In this monthly newsletter, I am going to highlight a few past events as well as some upcoming events. I also want to remind everyone that award nominations are due on November 15, 2016. Please do not miss the opportunity to nominate someone.

October Monthly Dinner Meeting: Juan Calderon from Cal OSHA presented the regulatory updates on construction hazards, confined spaces and lock-out/tag-out requirements at the October Dinner Meeting focused on safety. Meeting attendees enjoyed the dinner buffet at Zio Fraedo’s, Concord, so much that the Board decided to hold our December holiday dinner meeting there too. So, we can all look forward to a special holiday buffet at Zio Fraedo’s on December 1st. A flyer for the December event has been posted on the Section’s website.

novermber-2016-dinner-meetingNovember Dinner Meeting: Michelle D. Beason, PE of National Plant Services presented “New Technologies for Collection System Asset Management”. The new technologies covered recycling jet vacs that can recycle over 10,000 gallons of drinking water per day, multi-sensor inspections using laser and sonar to accurately quantify pipe degradation, acoustical testing equipment, and sewer lateral pipe lining processes. The event was held at the Back Forty BBQ, Pleasant Hill and the bountiful supply of ribs did not help for moderation right before Thanksgiving!

Northern Safety Day: Santa Clara Valley Section and Redwood Empire Section jointly organized Northern Safety Day on October 19th at the Yolo County Fairgrounds,Woodland. The event was well attended and was well attended with almost 400 attendees.
