EBMUD’s Successful 105” Sewer Interceptor Rehabilitation in Oakland
The East Bay Municipal Utility District’s $14 million, 3rd Street Interceptor Phase 2 Project in Oakland entails slip lining nearly a mile of a 105-inch diameter interceptor. Construction was planned to take two-years and use up to four jacking pits, but the contractor is on target to complete the work one year ahead of schedule using just three pits. Costs were reduced by approximately 40% and community impacts were significantly mitigated compared to similar projects using other rehabilitation methods. This project is the second phase of EBMUD’s $45M.
Kingsley Kuang is an Associate Civil Engineer with EBMUD and has 9 years of experience. He served as project manager during design and construction manager for the interceptor rehabilitation project. He has a bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from U.C. Berkeley and a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from San Jose State University.
Gary Lin is an Associate Civil Engineer with EBMUD and was the technical design lead for this project. He has nearly ten years of experience in the wastewater industry, with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC Davis and UC Berkeley, respectively.
